Wildfire Risk Reduction Summer Street Party

The Nelson & Area Wildfire Risk Reduction Committee, comprising representatives from BC Parks, the City of Nelson, the Ministry of Forests, and the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), invites you to an exciting and informative community event.

Event Details:

  • Location: Hall Street Plaza (Corner of Hall Street and Baker Street)
  • Admission: Free
  • Extras: Complimentary BBQ and refreshments, family-friendly activities, and FireSmart giveaways.

Why Attend? This street party offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about wildfire threats and learn how to protect our communities. Connect with experts and gain valuable insights into:

  1. Understanding Wildfire Risks: Learn about the current wildfire risks in and around our communities.
  2. Ongoing Mitigation Efforts: Discover the proactive measures being taken to reduce wildfire risks.
  3. Homeowner Actions: Find out what steps you can take to protect your property from wildfire threats.

Current Initiatives:
• City of Nelson and RDCK: Both are engaged in fuel mitigation projects, public education campaigns to reduce wildfire risks and  provide FireSmartä  programs to help homeowners reduce wildfire risk on their own properties. Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans have been developed for Nelson, and Area E & F, these plans guide future planning and wildfire mitigation.

  • BC Parks: Implementation of the West Arm Provincial Park Fire Management Plan, ongoing fuel mitigation work within West Arm Provincial Park  including fuel reduction treatments completed above the city water intake on Five Mile Creek(TU 2B), and fuel reduction prescription completed on TU 6 (Svoboda), as well as  fuel reduction near Stickland Creek / Harrop.
  • Selkirk District: Developed fuel management prescriptions for two areas within the Nelson Wildland Urban Interface at Granite Point and 49er Creek in 2023. In 2024, there is development of a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) WRR Plan that includes both sides of the valley from the Playmor Junction to Grohman and to Giveout FSR. Identifying high wildfire risk areas and priority areas for fuel treatments.
  • BC Wildfire Service: Collaborating with the City of Nelson on fuel mitigation programs and prescribed burns. Assisted and managed the Intersection prescribed burn and Selous Creek prescribed burn .
  • Community Engagement: Activities such as FireSmartä workshops, community clean-up days, and collaborations with local organizations to promote wildfire awareness and preparedness.

About Us: The Nelson & Area Wildfire Risk Reduction Committee is dedicated to minimizing wildfire impacts through collaboration, resource sharing, and community education. We partner with BC FireSmart, homeowners, agencies, and land managers to ensure community safety.
