Nelson firefighters had a busy evening yesterday into Friday morning battling several blazes in and around the City.
The first blaze occurred just after 5 p.m., with all on-duty firefighters and 17 off-duty members of the Nelson Fire Rescue Service responding to a house fire on Robertson Ave in Rosemont.
When crews arrived, firefighters saw heavy smoke billowing from the home. The first crew on scene focused on controlling the blaze from the exterior.
When they entered the building for an interior attack and primary search, the team found a Boston Terrier inside the home.
The dog was taken outside, given oxygen, and eventually regained consciousness.
Nelson Fire Rescue says the blaze appears to have started in an unfinished basement and travelled into the ceiling via various additions and renovated walls.
A total of 20 firefighters responded to the fire, and one was taken to hospital for observation.
The fire service says the damage incurred is believed to be around $150,000. The cause is still under investigation.
Backyard burn gone wrong
While crews were busy fighting the blaze on Robertson Ave, they received another call at about 6:15 p.m. regarding an out-of-control backyard burn that was extending into the trees on Trevor Street.
Assistant Fire Chief Rick Maida and three other members responded to the incident, arriving on scene to a 30m x 30m blaze on a steep, wooded residential property.
Nelson Fire Rescue called the BC Wildfire Service for backup as a precaution, as crews were already stretched thin with the house fire in Rosemont. The wildfire service supplied an initial attack crew as a result.
“Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that there is no backyard burning allowed in the City of Nelson unless authorized by the Fire Chief. We would also like to take this moment to thank BC Wildfire for their continued support,” said the fire service in a statement.
Nelson’s first wildfire of 2025
The fiery evening continued into Friday morning, when a wildfire broke out south of Nelson just after 2 a.m.
The wildfire was located by Nelson Fire Rescue crews about 1 km up Give Out Creek Forest Service Road and was about 2 hectares in size upon arrival.
The fire service first worked to control and stop the flames to prevent them from spreading. However, crews encountered steep, challenging terrain with poor visibility.
The fire is currently under control, and there is no risk to the public. BC Wildfire has been requested for assistance.
The cause remains unknown.
