Nelson Nerds, Kasper Breisnes (12 years old) and Eric Bibby (13 years old) are off to Vancouver to battle it out in the BC/Yukon LEGO Championships.
The duo won the Kelowna Qualifier tournament for FIRST LEGO League Challenge earlier this month, securing their spot in the March 9 showdown, along with 7 other teams from around the southern interior.
“We won two awards in Kelowna, we won the champions award which is the overall award and the robot performance award which is the award for the most points scored in a robot run.” said Eric.
The team says their excited to take their love of LEGO to a bigger stage.
“It feels really cool actually because we had been doing the LEGO robotic stuff for ages before we even were having the idea of joining the competition, so it was cool to just be able to test ourselves with the skills that we have been having fun with for a while.” said Kasper.
Eager to see what the team can do? Well, they want to show you. Kasper and Eric will have their skills and LEGO robot on display at the Nelson Youth Centre on Saturday February 22, from 2-4pm.
“We’re going to bring our robot and the competition table so they can see a demo of how the robot works and get a feel for the whole competition.” said Kasper.
Provided the team perform well in Vancouver, the next stop could be Worlds held in Houston, Texas.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge
FLL is a worldwide STEM program for ages 9-14 that incorporates building and coding a LEGO robot to complete a game as well as a research project solving a real-world problem.
This year’s challenge is themed around oceans.
As exciting and big as this opportunity is, so too, are the costs. The team has set up a GoFundMe page to help get them to Vancouver.
