Community members packed the Village of Kaslo’s council chambers this week, as the village hosted a special community meeting to discuss the South Beach RV Park development proposal.
Council staff provided an update on where the proposal is at and the purchase and sale agreement of the land.
Mayor Suzan Hewat says gaining community feedback was the next step as the development progresses.
“Based upon the feedback received from members of the public during the question-and-answer period and additional questions that the members of council had, we’ve directed to staff to look into a few more things and we have referred the item to our January 14th meeting in 2025.” said Hewat.
Hewat says the people in attendance at the meeting were primarily opposed to the development and misunderstand the role of council.
“Some of the things were not things that we can address. We cannot tell the developer what they’re going to do on their land.” said Hewat.
“They presented us with a proposal which is what we have to deal with.”
Fifteen community members spoke at the meeting, which was granted extra time to meet the needs of those wanting to speak.
However, residents are encouraged to reach out and express their concerns before the next council meeting in the new year.
“We appreciate the interest in this project, and we appreciate that people are getting engaged.” said Hewat.
“If you have additional questions, please reach out to staff, if you could go into the village office and talk to the front desk staff.”
“If they cannot answer your question, they will refer it to another member of staff,”
“We’ve got a great staff that are doing their best to work their way through a complex project, and please continue to write to Council with your concerns, and if people are in support as well, we want to hear that. We want it to be balanced input, if at all possible.”
“We know that the Facebook comments are happening, but that’s not the mechanism to get your information to Council.”
The Village of Kaslo will reach out to the South Beach Working Group to request a meeting prior to the January 15 council meeting.
