Early morning blaze damages building on Josephine Street

Nelson Fire Rescue service battled a structure fire on Josephine Street early Thursday morning. November 21.

A media release from NFRS states it received a call about a pallet fire on Herridge Lane at 12:18 a.m.

When the first responding crew members arrived on the scene, they found an active structure fire on the exterior of a two-storey brick building at 461 Josephine Street.

The combustible walls and roof of the structure covering the rear basement stairs were completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters quickly knocked down the open flames at the rear of the building while organizing an interior attack as more crew members arrived on the scene.

As crews gained interior access to the basement and first floor of the building, they found that the fire had just started spreading through two windows and one door, which they were able to stop using a hose line.

The building sustained damage to the rear exterior stairs and the three rooms with fire-exposed windows and doors.

The fire service says the incident is a timely reminder of the importance of ensuring residents have working smoke alarms in their homes, adding that smoke alarms 10 years or older should be replaced.
