Nelson Fire & Rescue Services are reminding residents about safe cooking after responding to reports of a fire Tuesday afternoon, September 10.
At 15.28 hours, Nelson Fire & Rescue Services received report of a fire at 805 Nelson
Avenue.
On arrival at the scene, crews observed that the fire alarm was activated and many
people had evacuated the building.
Upon entry to the building, the fire alarm system indicated a sprinkler system flow was active in a suite on the second floor, in which fire crews made their way
to the second floor and made entry into the suite, where they found a fire on the stove in the kitchen.
Fire crews remained on the scene to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and to assist with cleanup.
The fire damage was contained to one suite, however, the building suffered water damage on the floors below.
In total, 7 firefighters and 2 chief officers responded to the incident, utilizing two fire engines and one command vehicle.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to offer some cooking safety tips:
• Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.
• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove.
• Keep anything that can catch fire, such as oven mitts or wooden utensils, away from your
stovetop.
• Avoid loose clothing while cooking. Loose clothing can brush heating elements and easily
catch fire.
