RCMP are reminding motorists that school is back in session from today, so slow down and pay attention to the speed limits in marked school zones, which will be back in action from 8am until 5pm, Monday through Friday.
“All these kids that are going back to school are extremely excited and not paying attention to what they’re doing. Therefore, it falls to people who are using the roadway to keep them as safe as possible by slowing down, keeping your head up, and watching all your corners.” said BC Highway Patrol’s Vince LeBlanc.
It also means a heavy increase of school busses on the roadways in the community with a reminder that drivers are not to pass those busses when their red lights are flashing and their stop sign is engaged.
Speeds in school zones are set low to ensure that if a child was accidentally struck by a vehicle that they would likely survive.
Even a marginal increase of 5km/hr over the speed limit could mean that a pedestrian would not survive the encounter with the vehicle.
So keep your eyes on the road and your speed at or under 30km/hr in posted school zones, the kids will thank you.
