The Nelson Police Department responded to 154 calls this week, from July 28 to August 3.
Vehicle Fire at Senior Centre
One call was regarding a vehicle fire at Mountain Lakes Senior Centre on July 29.
According to a media release from NPD, the owner of the vehicle tried to start it up after a month of it being unused.
When the man started the car, his foot became lodged on the pedal. The vehicle ran continuously for 15 minutes before staff were able to free him.
When officers arrived, the hood of the vehicle was on fire, with thick, black smoke billowing from underneath.
NPD said that fortunately, Nelson Fire Rescue Service responded quickly to extinguish the blaze before it spread. No injuries were reported.
Nelson Arsonist Update
Nelson Police are continuing their diligent work investigating the string of arsons that occurred on July 24.
According to NPD, this week officers have been canvassing the locations of the fires to find CCTV video and witnesses to the event.
The accused arsonist, David Travis, remains in custody.
“The NPD is grateful to members of the public who have aided in our investigation. This is a serious crime, especially in light of the wildfires we are witnessing near neighbouring communities, and the evidence submitted by members of the public has been invaluable,” said the detachment.
NPD helps lost senior
On Wednesday, July 31, officers received a call to help an elderly male who had gotten lost.
Police said that the lost individual suffers from dementia and had recently moved to a new home.
After going out for food, the man couldn’t remember how to get back, but constables were able to help him get home safely and connect with his family members, who said they would be coming to assist him.
