City of Trail braces for second heat wave; cooling centre opens

Environment Canada has issued another heat warning for the Southern Interior Region, prompting the City of Trail to re-open its cooling centre.

The forecast is calling for temperatures in the city to reach as high as 41°C by Sunday.

Anyone needing a place to cool down is encouraged to visit the United Church, located at 1300 Pine Avenue, which will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. until temperatures start to cool off.

“Environment Canada has announced a heat warning again,” said Mayor Colleen Jones.

“So, we have once again opened up the United Church, and as you approach the church, there will be signs to direct you to the cooling centre.”

The cooling centre is operated by volunteers. Water and snacks are also provided, donated by local businesses and grocery stores.

During the previous heat wave, the centre operated from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Jones explained that the decision to reduce hours this time was made to provide volunteers with some well-deserved rest.

“We had to cut the hours back a little bit. We wanted to save the energy of our volunteers. They’ve been very generous with their time, and we recognize that those are long hours, so we’re going to try the 12-8. If we need to change those again, then we will, but we’re just playing this day by day right now.”

The city opens the cooling centre when temperatures reach around 38°C during the day and 17°C at night. Jones said she anticipates the centre will remain open until Wednesday.

“We’re in really uncharted territory here with this heat wave. It changes so quickly, and we don’t know what we’re doing day to day. I just want people to know that we have this cooling centre set up, and if they need to stop in, please do.”

Her invitation isn’t restrictive to just Trail residents.

In the wake of Thursday’s evacuation order for 11 properties in the Silverton-Nakusp area, Jones offers the centre up for evacuees who also need a place to stay cool.

“If they’re heading through our community, please know that the cooling centre is open for them as well. They can stop in, get cooled down, get refreshed, get some direction as to where they’re going, or where they need to be next, or just to have a period of time where they can relax a little bit and figure things out along the way.”
