36th annual Nelson Art Walk kicks off Saturday

Over 40 local artists will be showcasing their work and talent at the first of two Nelson Art Walks this Saturday, marking the opening night of Nelson’s 36th annual Art Walk.

The 36th Nelson Art Walk, organized annually by the Nelson & District Arts Council (NDAC), will feature over 30 different venues around town this season.

Stephanie Myers, Art Walk Coordinator, said the event provides an opportunity for local artists to see their artwork in the community and serves as a great stepping stone for emerging artists.

“It’s a really great way for artists to break into having their art on actual walls out in the public. If someone is pursuing an artistic career, it’s a great way to boost their curriculum vitae (CV). It gives them an idea of what it might look like to send an application to a gallery or an art space to have their art on the walls in the future, so it’s kind of like the first step in an artist’s career.”

There will be two Art Walks this summer, with the first kicking off at 6 p.m. this Saturday, and the second one on July 27.

Artists will be on hand to chat about their work and creative process, with most of the showcased pieces available for sale as well.

Myers said Nelson is rich in artistic talent and that it’s special and important to showcase it.

“Nelson’s been known as the best little arts town, and we want to make sure we keep that reputation by celebrating our artists. Most of the work is for sale, and that’s kind of the point—to get the art out there in places where folks might not expect to see it and to purchase art. The price points are really economical, and you can get an original piece to put on your walls, which helps artists maintain their practice and continue creating.”
