The City of Nelson is currently working to update its Official Community Plan (OCP) and is calling on the community to help shape the future of Nelson.
The current OCP was adopted in 2011. The City stated on its website that it was due for an update to align with the city’s other planning documents and reflect changes in community priorities.
Last fall, a series of public engagement initiatives were held as part of phase two of the OCP update process, which helped the city determine the plan’s four foundational values, listed as follows:
- Charming buildings, vibrant public spaces, and a diversity of cultures
- Year-round safe and active lifestyles and tourism
- A welcoming and compassionate community
- Regenerative and climate resilient leadership for all systems
Phase three of the OCP update process has involved the project team evaluating the current OCP policies, along with a variety of public engagement initiatives over the last few months to gather input and opinions on the policy intentions.
There are currently three active public surveys launched by the city seeking feedback.
The OCP policy areas have been grouped into each survey, with the first one focusing on social and climate resilience, the second focusing on built and natural environments, and the third about utility and economic infrastructure.
Survey 1 is open now until June 30, but surveys 2 and 3 close on June 14.
Community members are also invited to participate in the last of three open houses next Wednesday, June 19, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Rod & Gun Club.
Additionally, three workshops are scheduled this month for residents to provide input on the strategic shifts being considered for the OCP Land Use Section.
Those who complete the survey, attend an open house, or register for a workshop can enter the Engagement Passport Contest for a chance to win a variety of prizes and gift cards.
