Special Olympics BC Nelson celebrates 40 years

Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Nelson is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week with a celebration and fundraiser at Broken Hill on Thursday, June 13.

SOBC Nelson is one of the longest-running SOBC locals in the Kootenays. It offers athletes with diverse abilities the chance to participate in 5-pin bowling, swimming, snowshoeing, bocce, and floor hockey, guided and supported by a network of local volunteers.

SOBC Nelson board chair Lisa Schmidtke said SOBC allows people who are usually socially isolated the opportunity to make friends and connect with their community.

“A lot of our local athletes have competed in multiple facets of the events themselves, including travel to Europe and different areas. It gets people who are generally socially isolated with diverse needs out in their community and interacting with each other and with ourselves.”

At Thursday’s event, SOBC Nelson will be celebrating its 40-year anniversary and raising money for the organization.

Chad Hansen, owner of Broken Hill, said the fundraiser celebration will feature live contests, entertainment, and a live auction.

“We’ve got signed jerseys from the Raptors that we’re going to be auctioning off, nine Canucks jerseys, and we’ve got a package which is a day of cat skiing on the Valhalla property, which Baldface donated,” said Hansen.

“Plus, we’re going to throw in a two-night accommodation package at the Broken Hill Flats that are above Broken Hill. So that’s like a $3,000 prize. Now, we don’t expect to get $3,000, but if we got $1,000 or $1,500, that would be huge for Special Olympics.”

The event is an 80’s themed party. Those who can’t make it but want to donate to the organization are encouraged to go to the SOBC Nelson Facebook page and scan a QR code with a link to donate.

The event kicks off at 7 p.m., a minimum $10 donation to the organization is required at the door.
