Three local women have declared their candidacy for the Kootenay Central riding in the 2024 provincial election.
This new riding will replace the current Nelson-Creston riding, with the addition of Nakusp, New Denver, and Silverton.
Brittny Anderson, the current MLA for Nelson-Creston, announced in May that she will be seeking re-election in hopes of continuing in her role for another four years.
Anderson is a lifelong resident of the Kootenays and a former small-business owner. She previously served as a Nelson city councillor and a board member for the Regional District of Central Kootenay before being elected as the region’s NDP MLA.
A media release from the BC NDP party stated that Anderson’s campaign priorities focus on improving housing, health care, and environmental progress in the region.
Corrine Mori has announced she will run as an independent..
Mori, who resides just outside Nelson, said in a news release that she chose to run as an independent because she believes Kootenay residents are looking for an alternative to status quo politics. She said her campaign prioritizes solutions over rhetoric, focusing on healthcare reform, homeownership programs, and tax cuts.
Nicole Charlwood has thrown her hat into the ring for the BC Green Party. She announced her candidacy in February 2023.
Charlwood ran against Anderson in the 2020 provincial election, securing 32.1 per cent of the votes, falling short of Anderson by less than ten per cent.
Charlwood’s campaign focuses on ending greenwashing, clearcutting, and improving investments in water source protection.
No local candidates for the BC United and BC Conservative Parties have been announced yet.
The 2024 BC Provincial Election is scheduled for October 19.
