Nelson Fire & Rescue Service has approved a residential burn period for the end of March, to reduce the amount of deadfall and woody debris around residences ahead of wildfire season.
The burn period will run from Mar. 30 to May 12.
The primary focus of the burn is to minimize the risk of a fire posed by ground fuels, stated Nelson Fire Rescue Service in a press release.
Only non-compostable woody debris, such as clean, dry wood present after residential yard clean-ups, is permitted during this burn. Burning vegetative yard waste, like leaves, grass clippings, dimensional lumber, and other construction materials, is prohibited.
Burning woody debris requires a permit; the permit can be picked up at the Nelson fire hall for a $10 fee.
Individuals must also provide proof of fire insurance for the property where the burning will take place and report to Nelson Fire and Rescue Services on the days they intend to burn.
The main burn period is subject to weather, venting, and local fire conditions.
