Search warrant results in nearly six-hour standoff in Creston

A 50-year-old Creston man has been brought into custody following a nearly six-hour standoff.

On December 20th at around 11:00 am, Creston RCMP and the Southeast District Containment Team executed multiple search warrants relating to the possession of drugs and drug trafficking.

The resulting standoff near the HWY 3 and HWY 3A junction saw the man, who is known to RCMP with a history of violence and weapon offences, refusing to come out or surrender.

In efforts to bring the man into custody, the Southeast District Emergency Response Team was deployed.

“The equipment, technology, and skill sets that come with the Emergency Response Team greatly aid in ensuring the public’s safety, the safety of our officers, and the safety of the alleged offender,” said Creston RCMP Commander Staff Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk in a release.

“This was a situation where patience, the use of de-escalation techniques, and intervention equipment succeeded in bringing the matter to a conclusion without harm being caused to any person.”

While the search warrant was being executed, officers also conducted a traffic stop relating to the trafficking of controlled drugs and substances that resulted in two Creston women, aged 47 and 30, being arrested.

Illicit drugs including opioids and weapons were seized as the investigation remains ongoing.

“We recognize that there are many vulnerable people in our society that are targeted by drug traffickers, specifically with opioids,” said Buliziuk.

“It is a priority for us to target those opioid traffickers through our enforcement initiatives and to limit the availability of illicit, street-level drugs in our communities. Our Detachment will continue to focus our efforts on known offenders repetitiously committing crimes within the community. This is an expectation that has been made clear to us by the people we serve in the Creston Valley.”

Anyone with any additional information that may assist in the investigation is encouraged to reach out to the Creston RCMP Detachment.
