A Nelson judge has announced June 19 as the tentative date for a verdict to be delivered in the manslaughter trail of a man accused of killing an off-duty Abbotsford police officer.
Judge Lindsay Lyster is scheduled to deliver her verdict on that day but she is waiting for further proceedings to be held this month to solidify that date.
Lyster said during a hearing today she will meet with Crown and defense counsel later this month to determine if it suitable to Alex Willness to appear for the verdict.
“In criminal matters like this, in person is preferable,” Lyster says.
Court is scheduled to reconvene on May 15 to finalize the verdict date and determine if Willness will be in attendance.
Willness is charged with manslaughter after beating Allan Young over the head with a skateboard in July 2020.
The trial started on Feb. 28 and lasted one month. Evidence was heard from several key witnesses including doctors, eye witnesses and police officers.
