World War II veteran Lionel Binette passes away at age 99

A World War II veteran many Nelsonites may recognize has passed away. With great sadness, the Nelson Legion has advised of the passing of Lionel Binette at the age of 99. During the war he served as a member of the Airborne Search and Rescue recovering downed pilots, many times behind enemy lines. He was a long time branch member and took part in Nelson’s Remembrance Day ceremony every year reading In Flander’s Fields.

From the 2017 Remembrance Day ceremonies in Nelson, parade commander Doug Brown, a retired British army officer, introduces veteran Lionel Binette, 98, to recite In Flanders Fields.

Binette’s family will be holding a Celebration of Life on Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 pm in the Legion Lounge.
