The Nelson Curling Centre won’t be in operation for the rest of the season. Club president Gordon Weiss says inspections have stepped up after the tragedy in Fernie and they were found to have some non-compliance issues last year. Then, a visual test found a small ammonia leak recently.
“Well a small leak was detected during a mandatory inspection and although the leak couldn’t be found, we’ve been shut down.”
He says they’re hoping that the City and regional district can help find a solution and operate the plant in future.
“We don’t want to operate the plant because we don’t feel we have the expertise. The RDCK has employees at the ice rink next door so they have the expertise, and we’d like them to take over operation; we’ve asked that. That probably requires, I know it does require, a collaboration between the City and the RDCK.”
Options are being looking at for either a replacement or repair.
