The Nelson Police Department is responding to some reports that have been going around on social media causing safety concerns. In one post a woman was said to have been chased around her vehicle by a male in the early morning hours, but was able to get away safely, explains Sergeant Dan Markevich. That incident became exaggerated online.
“The incident itself was no where near the event that was portrayed on social media. An event did occur there. There was a little bit of some concern and our officers did investigate that. But the exaggeration on social media, the public picks up on that very quickly and it’s a lot of cause for fear in the community that’s really unfounded.”
Other posts describe two separate assaults on women. Sergeant Markevich states the police haven’t received any official reports of either case, although police have been trying to investigate where the posts originated.
“A lot of them were shared back and forth so it’s been a little bit of work trying to track those people down to come up with the information . Most importantly, we would rely on the people that were involved in these assaults to come forward. We have checked, there haven’t been any reports for ambulance or anything like that that were required in the area.”
Anyone who knows about these incidents specifically is asked to give Nelson Police a call at the office. Sergeant Markevich adds if police become aware of any type of concern for public safety a concerted effort would be made to advise the public.
