Nelson City Council are expected to give final adoption to the Five Year Financial Plan today which includes a 2.5 per cent increase on property taxes. However, with an anticipated decrease from the Regional District of Central Kootenay the total effect will be down to 1.5 per cent. For the average residential home in Nelson, the estimated amount is $1,690.
Also on the agenda for City Council today is two possible locations for new murals. The Nelson and District Arts council are hosting a festival this August where many paintings will be added to local buildings. They’re looking at two locations on City property – the upper wall alongside Victoria Street of I.O.D.E. Park and the City parkade’s west wall which faces Stanley Street and the alley.
Nelson City staff are also presenting council with Bylaw amendments for laneway housing. New regulations were created that should make it easier and more affordable for builders and help with Nelson’s housing crunch. That includes changes to parking requirements, square footage and more.
Also, a Bylaw amendment that impacts Nelson’s only drive-through business is up for final approval. The City is restricting drive-throughs from operating 24-7 after A&W inquired about extending its hours. The City felt with it’s plans to eventually have residential developments in the Railtown area, it may cause problems.
Tonight’s council meeting is at 7:00pm at City Hall and will be video streamed on their website.
