The City of Nelson hosted another Disaster Day event this weekend. There were fire trucks, rescue boats, and information booths to help educate residents about what to do in case of emergency. Neil Harrower is the Coordinator with Red Cross Kootenay South East. He says it’s freshet season and there are a number of alerts in the area.
He says the Red Cross is currently looking for volunteers to help with disaster management.
The Ministry of Environment was another one of the agencies at the event. Vron Nomosad is an Environmental Emergency Response Officer with the ministry. He says hazardous material incidents don’t happen all the time, but there’s a number of different risks in our communities.
Nelson Fire Chief, Len McCharles, is encouraging people to sign up for the City’s new emergency alert system which was launched at Disaster Day.
You can sign up through the City’s website.
