Stetski seeks more protection for Kootenay lakes and rivers

A private member’s bill from Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski seeks to amend the Navigation Protection Act.

The act protects the public’s right to navigation and marine safety in navigable waters by regulating construction and making sure those lakes and streams aren’t polluted .

Steteski says the Conservative Government removed most of Canada’s navigable waters from protection in 2012.

He planned to introduce the bill last year after the Liberals expressed interest in adding more protection

He says it’s important to monitor what happens to our bodies of water.

The bill includes adding 12 lakes and 21 rivers in the Kootenays to the act.

Currently 100 lakes and 64 rivers in Canada are included.
