The Nelson Police Department says it’s noticed an increase in impaired driving by both alcohol and drugs in the last few days, causing some people to have their vehicles seized and driver’s licenses suspended.
Sgt. Corey Hoy says if you’re going to be drinking, you should make sure you have a safe ride home.

It didn’t take long for Nelson police to find a stolen car last week. It was reported missing about 4 one morning and 35 minutes later police located it downtown. They pulled it over and arrested a youth without incident. He’ll be in court today charged with taking the vehicle and breaching a curfew.

A woman is facing charges of assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm after an incident in Nelson. Police responded to a complaint in uphill about 5 a.m. Saturday and heard several screams when they arrived.
The victim was taken to hospital and treated for serious cuts to his head. The woman’s been released on strict conditions and will be in court April 11.

Nelson police are investigating after a youth was assaulted at a big house part in uphill early Saturday. He was taken to hospital with injuries to his face. Â Two suspects have been identified and charges are pending.

A man will stand trial next month for an alleged assault in Nelson.
Police say one day last week they were called to the 300 block of Victoria St. about a drunk man who allegedly assaulted another man and was yelling and smashing glass in front of a business. However, when officers arrived, he’d already left.
Later that night, police got another complaint from Ward and Baker streets that the same man was yelling. Police arrested him but say he assaulted and threatened an officer.
The man is charged with assault, mischief, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, uttering threats, causing a disturbance, and being drunk in public. He’ll remain in custody until his trial.

A panhandler is facing criminal harassment charges after being arrested Friday in the 600 block of Front St.
Police say they got a complaint that the man was being aggressive and followed the complainant into a business after being refused money. They say he continued to harass the person until police arrived.
Police say received numerous other complaints that day about the man aggressively demanding money.
The man has been remanded pending a bail hearing this week.

Early Friday, police found a drunk man lying in the middle of an intersection downtown Nelson.
He tried to run, but was caught soon after and arrested. Police say they found a “substantial” amount of drugs and drug paraphernalia on him. He was released one sober, but is facing charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
