Lights returning to Nelson intersection

Traffic lights will return to the four-way stop at Josephine and Baker streets.

Nelson Hydro and public works will work over the next two weeks to return lights to the intersection before winter.

The intersection functioned as a four-way stop for much of the summer and fall.

“The original trial period was not planned to last for this duration,” public works director Colin Innes said in a news release. “Initially, the conclusion of the trial period was to coincide with the conclusion of the downtown planning process.”

A replacement light standard and lighting will be chosen as part of the downtown planning process. However, that process is still underway and Innes says they figured returning lights to the intersection would be a good idea for winter.

He said staff were able to fabricate a replacement light standard by welding together portions of several different standards that were no longer in service.

“Once the downtown planning process has been completed we will be looking to phase in the change from the old light standards to the new standard that is ultimately selected as the replacement,” Innes said.
