Nelson pushes panhandling bylaw to 2017

Nelson city council has postponed adopting its controversial panhandling bylaw.

In a 4-3 vote Monday night council opted to shelve the bylaw until at least September 2017.

Councillor Michael Dailly originally supported adopting it but changed his mind after speaking with people who work with the street population.

The postponement will give the city’s street culture collaborative more time to do their job.

They’re hoping to get funding to hire an outreach worker.

The proposed bylaw wouldn’t ban panhandling but would restrict where and how it takes place.
