Local politician concerned about corporate influence

A Grand Forks City Councillor says the public is tired of the influence of the corporate world on government.

Julia Butler is speaking to the perception of lobbying by coprorate sponsors at last month’s annual conference of the Association Of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments.

Butler says the friendship of sponsors with government can influence the thinking and voting on resolutions by councillors.

But John Dooley, the Local Government and Public Relations Rep with one of those sponsors, the Interior Lumber Manufacturers Association, says the conference has lots of corporate support that helps make it happen.

Dooley says elected officials make informed decisions and he highly doubts the presence of sponsors would influence them one way or the other.
