Increase to SAR budget rejected

Funding for the RDCK Search And Rescue service is caught up in political wrangling.

Nelson Council has narrowly rejected a request for incremental increases for the service.

They expressed concerns that Queen City taxpayers would be on the hook for 50% of the increase based on tax assessment.

It was also noted that council recently chose not to give increases to its own city arts and cultural groups.

But Councillor Michael Dailly wanted to approve the increase suggesting that’s an essential service.

Nelson Council is growing increasingly concerned about what they see as over-taxing of Queen City residents for regional services.
