Portion of Galena Trail temporarily closed due to riverbank erosion

A portion of the Rosebery to Three Forks Regional Trail (Galena Trail) in the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK) Electoral Area H has been temporarily closed.

The RDCK states that the closure is the result of a significant slough of the riverbank that has affected the integrity of the bridge between the cable car crossing and the Three Forks trailhead.

As a result, it was determined that continued use of this portion of the trail could pose safety risks to trail users, as the slough has impacted the use of the bridge.

The trail remains open from Rosebery to the cable car, and the cable car will remain closed until the bridge installation is completed to ensure the safety of all trail users.

The RDCK is in the process of developing a plan to replace the bridge before it is further affected by the slough and expects to reopen the trail by the beginning of June. Please respect all trail closure areas, signage, and barriers.

Meanwhile, the Cottonwood Lake to Hall Siding portion of the Nelson to Salmo Great Northern Trail, is closed.

This portion of the trail is annually closed due to an increase in bear activity and the goal is to reduce the number of human and bear interactions.

Due to the recent warmer weather and snow melt the trail is being closed slightly earlier than usual.

The RDCK is urging residents to respect all trail closure areas.

“As bears are coming down the mountains and out of hibernation it is always important to stay bear aware. Bears and other wildlife can be found on any trail.” said the RDCK.
