As the federal election grows near, get to know the Conservatives candidate for the Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee riding: Scott Anderson.
Who is Scott Anderson?
Born in Winnipeg, Scott grew up in India and Mexico, giving what he says is a wide perspective on the world and a real appreciation for the potential of Canada.
“I’ve lived in Vernon for over 20 years with my wife Linda and we have three grown kids. I’m a veteran military officer (Captain), former two-term Vernon city councillor, and interim leader of the Conservative Party of BC.” said Scott.
Outside the political sphere, Scott is a business owner as well a man with many hats throughout his life.
“I’ve been a financial advisor, VP of sales, soldier, business owner, roughneck on a fast rig, construction boss, and several other occupations. I’ve always had one foot in the blue collar and one in the white-collar world, that means I can deal with folks from all walks of life.”
“I’m as comfortable in a lunchroom as I am in a boardroom.”
“I found during seven years as a Vernon city councillor that most of my work life was helping people with issues and dealing with crises that leap out of the woodwork. I plan to run an office that actively seeks to help folks with issues, regardless of jurisdiction.”
The Issues: Housing and the economy
Scott highlights housing, affordability and the economy as the key issues in the riding, as well as localized concerns such as firearm rights, water flow in the Arrow Lake system and the current cull ordering threatening a local Ostrich farm in Edgewood.
“People are looking for positive change, lower taxes, and affordable food and housing.” said Scott.
“There are so many issues I’ve heard about in that part of the riding. Lake levels on Arrow Lake, the closing of forest service roads, and Liberal firearm laws are all problems that need attention, and as a firearm collector and former soldier I’ll do what I can to help solve them.”
Scott plans to address the cost-of-living pressures by continuing to fight for lower taxes, while he aims to address the housing affordability and homeless crisis through slowing immigration and building more homes.
“Folks are hurting and uncertain about the future and those who rent are despairing of ever owning a home. The Conservative Party intends to build homes and make home ownership possible.”
“Eliminating the domestic carbon tax will not help bring down the cost of living alone, especially if it’s simply moved over to the real culprit, the “industrial” part of the carbon tax.:
“The Liberals taking away the visible part of the tax looks good to be sure because we pay less at the pumps for now but loading it on to the industrial side instead will just mean that industry has to pay more, which means that things will cost more to make and cost more to buy.”
“The Conservative Party will eliminate both the domestic and the industrial tax, meaning that not only will you pay less at the pumps, but everything you buy will cost less because they will cost less to make.”
Scott says the Conservatives plan to unleash the potential of Canada.
“Increasing our resource job, repealing the Liberal No-Pipelines Law C-69, lifting the Liberal cap on energy that Carney said he will keep, and quickly approving LNG plants, pipelines, mines, and major projects.”
“We’ll bring in Canada First Shovel Ready Zones will pre-permit big projects, so Canadians can stop filling out paperwork and start building now, and we’ll approve a new national pipeline—like the one the Liberals blocked a few years back. We could send prairie oil to the Maritimes and over the Atlantic to break Europe’s dependence on Putin while we break our dependence on the United States.”
“Finally, we’ll knock down interprovincial trade barriers creating one open free market economy.”
Trade war and tariffs
Looking to the threat to the south, Scott says Canada has no choice but to step up and control what we can.
“Tariffs are harmful to the economy and people on the ground who have to pay higher prices. I understand the theory behind Trump’s tariffs, but I suspect the harm done is going to more than outweigh the benefits he sees. Canada has no choice but to reciprocate.”
Finals Words
Scott says when you vote for him you are voting for a lot more.
“Experience, strength, and the ability to lead when called on.” said Scott.
“My two terms as a city councillor mean that I have a strong record to stand on, including saving Vernon millions of dollars in clean up costs for tent cities, fighting to stop gender surgery for minors, and implementing policies to curb crime.”
“On my last visit to Nakusp and the Slocan Valley I promised I’d be as involved in your issues as I was in Vernon’s and its surroundings, and it’s a promise I intend to keep.”
