Residential burn period commences in Nelson

Nelson Fire & Rescue Service has approved the residential burn period for this year, running from March 30 to May 12.

The fire service says the primary focus of the backyard burning period is to minimize the risk of a fire posed by ground fuels ahead of the wildfire season.

Only non-compostable woody debris, such as clean, dry wood present after residential yard clean-ups, is permitted during this burn.

Burning vegetative yard waste, like leaves, grass clippings, dimensional lumber, and other construction materials, is prohibited.

A permit is required for the burning of permitted woody debris, which can be picked up at the Nelson fire hall for a $10 fee.

Individuals must also provide proof of fire insurance for the property where the burning will take place and report to Nelson Fire and Rescue Services on the days they intend to burn.

They must also call the fire service each day before burning to confirm venting and notify the fire hall.

Venting must be deemed suitable by the fire service in conjunction with the daily venting index and regulations set out by the Ministry of Environment. Nelson Fire & Rescue may rescind permits if conditions adversely affect adjacent neighbours.

Size and location

Burn piles cannot exceed 1.5 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height, and they must be five metres away from any forest land, building, structures, stand-alone trees, or any other flammable or combustible material.

Someone must be with the burn pile at all times with a shovel on hand, and a garden hose must also be connected and present on the site.

Residents should also carry their cell phones on them at the time of burning, just in case.
