With warmer weather bringing more cyclists onto the roads, the Nelson Police Department emphasizes the importance of bike safety and adherence to traffic laws.
“We’re glad to see people using bikes as transportation, and we want everyone to stay safe while doing so,” says Special Constable Silk Edwards.
Under the Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists must follow the same regulations as drivers, including obeying road signs and traffic signals.
Additionally, the following rules apply:
• Helmets are required at all times
• Cyclists must ride as close as possible to the right side of the roadway
• Hand signals must be used to indicate turns
• Only one person per bicycle is permitted
• Riding on sidewalks is prohibited
• The minimum age to operate a light e-bike is 14
• The minimum age to operate a standard e-bike is 16
