RCMP says distracted has become a serious issue across the province and is now considered one of the deadliest forms of impaired driving, which is why in the month of March, BC Highway Patrol is focusing on “education through enforcement” regarding the double dangers of driving while distracted and failing to wear your seat belt.
Highway patrol corporal Michael McLaughlin says not paying attention to the road is a deadly game and anyone who violates the law during this campaign will be given appropriate attention.
“Distracted driving, along with speeding and impaired driving, is consistently one of the top three contributors to fatal crashes in BC,” he says. “We often hear drivers ask for a warning, and distracted driving is so risky that your warning will be a violation ticket.
“The real consequences would be to get hurt or worse.”
Along with people being made aware of the dangers of distracted driving, McLaughlin says drivers must also be made aware of how important safety devices in the car are, and how they can save your life.
“If you don’t wear your seatbelt, a totally survivable collision will often become fatal,” he says. “And while securing your child with a car seat requires planning, your child’s life is worth it.”
According to police, 53 people die each year in BC because of not utilizing seatbelts properly.
The campaign will be launched in March.
