Nelson and Creston have both been awarded funds through the BC Government’s $19 million climate change mitigation fun.
The Town of Creston is getting $150,000 for a risk and vulnerability assessment and the City of Nelson is to receive about $95 258 for extreme temperature preparation.
MLA Brittny Anderson says the funding will better prepare the communities to withstand emergencies.
“These projects are really important to ensure that when there are emergencies, that local governments have plans in place and they’re prepared and ready to respond.” said Anderson.
“We know just like last summer; we had people on evacuation. Wildfire is always a risk. There’s also risks with flooding and extreme temperatures, so these are going to help both of these communities and be more prepared.”
Cranbrook is getting the biggest piece of the pie in the Kootenays, with $5 million to replace Gold Creek Dam.
Across B.C., 39 communities are receiving approximately $19 million for 46 local projects. The projects will help reduce the impact of future climate disasters by addressing current vulnerabilities and by supporting informed planning and decision making.
