Nelson warming centres activated

The City of Nelson’s extreme weather shelter and warming centres have been activated in response to this weeks extreme cold temperatures, which are forecast to continue into Wednesday.

An extreme weather shelter and a daytime warming centre were activated on the weekend to support the community’s most vulnerable, according to a social media post from Nelson Fire Rescue.

The Emergency Weather Shelter, located at the Anglican Church at 701 Ward Street, will be open nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. from January 19 to the morning of January 22.

The Daytime Warming Centre was activated on Monday and will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on January 20 and 21.

Additionally, the following community centres, drop-in centres, food banks, and soup kitchens are available for anyone who needs a warm place to stay or a hot meal during the winter months:

  • ANKORS (101 Baker Street): Open Monday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, it’s open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • The Salvation Army – Drop-In (601 Vernon Street): Open Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Nelson & District Community Complex (305 Hall Street): Open Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Our Daily Bread (520 Falls Street): Runs its Hot Meal Lunch Program Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • The Food Pantry at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church (701 Ward Street): Open Friday mornings from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Nelson Fire Rescue says vulnerable populations, such as seniors, children, and those experiencing homelessness, are at higher risk of cold-related illnesses.

Strong winds combined with low temperatures will create dangerously low wind chill values, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
