Nelson resident found deceased in Port Alberni

A 42-year-old man from Nelson has been found dead in Port Alberni.

A statement from Port Alberni RCMP says the detachment discovered the deceased male on December 10 after receiving a report from a Globalstar SOS device just before 1 a.m.

The device signalled a location south of Port Alberni and was associated with a 42-year-old man, last known to reside in Nelson, BC.

RCMP and the Alberni Valley Rescue Squad (SAR) attended the location of the SOS and conducted a search of the area, leading to the discovery of what appeared to be recently fallen trees and a small structure.

The man’s vehicle was also located nearby.

SAR found the man around 8 a.m. He was deceased and not far from his campsite.

RCMP say the body had to be airlifted by helicopter due to the remote location and challenging terrain.

Police and BC Coroners Service officials attended and conducted an initial examination of the man and the scene. There were no indications of foul play, and the death is not considered suspicious.

His family has been notified.
