RCMP shares tips for a spooky but safe Halloween

With spooky season in full swing, RCMP detachments are sharing some key safety tips to ensure this years Halloween is fun and fright-free for all ages.

Trail RCMP Sergeant Mike Wicentowich says officers will be patrolling throughout the evening on Thursday, ensuring traffic is slowed down to help keep trick-or-treaters safe.

He says parents and youth can help their efforts by considering the following tips.

“So, number one, if you see any incidents or have any concerns, feel free to give us a call, and we can attend to sort it out. As for tips for Halloween, we just want to make sure all kids are visible. Whether you have to add reflective material to their costumes or not, carry flashlights, and maybe wear glow sticks. It can be very hard to see little children or anyone else in the dark of night, and not every street here is equally lit.”

Parents are urged to stay with their young children if they’re trick-or-treating, and youth are advised to travel in groups and stick together, with a designated meeting spot communicated in case they get separated.

Additionally, the RCMP encourage parents to remind their children to stay on sidewalks and the sides of the road, to complete one side of the street at a time, to ensure they’re crossing the road at designated crosswalks, and to only accept treats at the door without entering anywhere to get candy.

Wicentowich adds that everyone should also carry a cell phone in case of emergencies and, as always, have all candy checked by a parent or adult before consuming it.

Motorists are also asked to be mindful of pedestrian traffic when driving around on Thursday night and are encouraged to avoid driving in residential zones when possible.
