Thousands of dollars worth of tools stolen in Nelson break and enter

Nelson Police are warning residents to lock up and avoid opportunistic theft, after reports of thousands of dollars worth of tools were stolen this week.

On Wednesday, October 23, a contractor contacted the Nelson Police Department to report that several thousand dollars worth of tools had been stolen from him.

He informed officers that he is currently conducting renovations on an empty apartment and that he had left his tools inside overnight. When he returned to the jobsite the next morning, the tools were gone.

The apartment building showed no obvious signs of forced entry; however, witnesses have reported various suspicious circumstances in or around the building, but none that can yet be definitively linked to the theft.

Police are still looking to recover the tools, which were stored in two hard canvas tool bags.

All tools were marked with the initials “JR.”

Anyone with information related to this file is urged to come forward.

Be vigilant and lock up

While Nelson Police do encounter cases of planned break and enter, it is more often a crime of opportunity.

“There are several measures you can take to deter criminals from targeting your home or business.” said Nelson Police Department.

“Ensure that all windows and doors are secured when no one is present, install lighting around entrances, ideally on a motion sensor, keep trees or bushes landscaped so that they don’t obstruct views, and keep premises free of discarded trash. A monitored alarm or camera system is also a prudent investment.”
