Nelson youth get a taste of the law

The Nelson Police Department will open its doors for its first Youth Police Academy, and they are looking for young locals to join the force- for four weeks that is.

The program consists of four sessions run throughout November for youths aged 12 to 15 years.

Giving interested students the chance to learn more about policing.

“It is an opportunity to introduce young people to policing and giving them a better sense of what we do, what police in general do, what makes Nelson unique, and what kind of skills and tools we get to work with.” said Silk Edwards, Community Safety Officer, Nelson Police Department.

“The program will provide a range of areas that come up day to day for us in policing, like radio communication, taking notes, being a witness, making arrests, making traffic stops, communication and conflict resolution tactics, and just giving students a wide range of skills and the methodology we use.”

The academy will offer a hands-on introduction to the world of law enforcement, featuring interactive activities, role-playing exercises, and informative discussions led by our officers.

Participants will explore key aspects of policing, such as use of force and conflict de-escalation, arrest, note-taking, communication, investigation, and decision-making.
