Nelson RCMP seeking witnesses from Taghum collision

Nelson RCMP are seeking witnesses following a collision this morning on Highway 3A and 6 at Taghum, September 5.

At 6am, the Nelson RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision. On attendance, with assistance from KERPA, EHS and the Beasley Fire Department, the vehicle had driven off the highway, overturned, and caught fire.

A passerby stopped to assist and was able to heroically rescue the unconscious driver from the burning vehicle by breaking a window and dragging them from the flaming wreckage.  The driver of the vehicle is currently reported to be in stable but serious condition.

The 20-year-old male driver from Castlegar, BC, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and investigators would like to speak to any potential witnesses.

Evidence at the scene suggested the driver and single occupant of a Mazda 3 had travelled off road right, colliding with a large rock and flipping over onto its roof.

“Any witnesses to the collision should contact Nelson RCMP by phoning 250 352 2156.” said Cpl Derek Pitt, Detachment Commander, Nelson RCMP.

The Nelson RCMP as well as the family of the injured driver would like to give a big THANK YOU! to Nelson resident Colby Weinrauch for his heroic actions today.

Colby’s quick thinking and action in the face of danger saved the life of the driver.

RCMP will be recommending Colby Weinrauch for the St. Johns Ambulance Life Saving Award as well as the BC Emergency Health Services Good Samaritan Award.

Traffic Update

The incident closed the Highway for up to an hour with a detour made available through Blewett.

Traffic was returned to single lane alternating traffic while clean up took place, with the road reopening at 8:30am.
