Bus goes off embankment near Six Mile Lakes Road

Firefighters with the North Shore Fire Department spent several hours recovering a light-duty bus that went off an embankment on Monday evening.

Fire Chief Tom Service said the department received reports of the incident, near Six Mile Road and Highway 3A, at around 10 p.m.

Upon arrival, crews found the driver, who was the sole occupant of the bus, had self-extricated and was waiting for first responders to arrive.

Service said the driver was uninjured and declined services from the ambulance.

Northbound traffic heading towards Nelson was rerouted through Six Mile Lakes Road and Holmberg Road for about three hours as crews worked to extract the bus, which Service said was a bit challenging due to the rocky terrain.

The scene was cleared at around 1 a.m.

Service said speed isn’t believed to have been a factor, as it appears the individual was travelling at a fairly low rate of speed while going over the embankment.

An investigation into the crash is being conducted by Nelson RCMP.
