Fire and Rescue respond to grass fire in Nelson

Nelson Fire and Rescue services have responded to reports of a grass fire on an elevated bank by the intersection of Highway3A and Government St around 3:30pm this afternoon, Tuesday June 25.

Four crew members responded and upon arrival they found a smoldering ground fire, 3m by 3m.

The crew moved quickly, trying to secure a means of getting water to the fire, and then limiting the fire’s growth.

Crews encountered some difficulty running a hose line to the elevated area, but rapidly extinguished the fire once access was secured.

In all, four firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine and one tender truck.

The fire appears to have originated from an abandoned fire pit. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that campfires, including fires in fire pits, are not permitted in the city limits.
