The incident occurred this morning, according to DriveBC, between China Creek Road and 200th Avenue.
A statement from the Castlegar Fire Department said they were called to the scene just before 6 a.m. with reports of a multi-vehicle collision and fire.
CFD responded with multiple rescue engines and successfully extinguished two separate fires on the scene before transferring command to the RCMP just after 8 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., Castlegar RCMP told Vista Radio that motorists can expect the highway closure to remain in effect for another 5-8 hours.
An assessment is in progress, and a detour via Highway 3’s Bombi Summit is in effect. Motorists should expect up to 30-minute delays.
