Nelson Air Cadets hosting Annual Ceremonial Review next weekend

On June 8, the 561 Nelson Osprey Air Cadet Squadron will hold their Annual Ceremonial Review at the Nelson Airport. A parade will begin at 10:30 a.m., and everyone is invited to attend and watch the cadets.

Formed in 1952, the 561 Nelson Osprey Squadron has provided a low-cost activity for teenagers aged 12 to 18 who reside in Nelson, Salmo, South Slocan, Balfour, and areas in between for over 70 years.

In the last month, the cadets of the 561 Nelson Squadron have had two days of flying.

A media release from the Department of National Defence stated that on April 20, the cadets helped at the Nelson Airport’s open house. 20 cadets were able to join a flight from the Nelson Airport to Ainsworth and back.

A few weeks later, on May 11, the cadets travelled to Trail and got to fly in glider and tow planes owned by the British Columbia Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada.

Each cadet experienced flight in both the glider and tow plane and assisted in launching the aircraft.

Cadets from 561 and Trail also attended a Field Training Exercise this month and launched model rockets.

The Squadron meets once per week on Wednesday evenings at the Nelson Eagles Hall (641 Baker Street).

New cadets are welcome anytime and may register online or come to any training night in person. Cadets are between the ages of 12 and 18.

Adults who would like to volunteer with the squadron or join our Squadron Sponsoring Committee are also welcome.

The training the cadets receive includes Leadership, Outdoor Survival, Music, Aviation, and other skills. Advanced summer training programs such as Power and Glider Pilot Licences, Music, Sports and Fitness, Range, Leadership, Music, and International Exchange are also available.

Certain Cadet Training levels and advanced courses may be applied as academic credits toward high school graduation.
