Stepping Stones emergency shelter has been closed following a bomb threat.
Nelson Police say a man threatened to blow up the building and The HUB on Vernon Street.
They say the man in his 40s was known to staff, who spoke to him along with police and warned him about his threats, but he was not arrested. The file remains open.
The shelter posted a “closed until further notice” sign on its door Monday while The HUB had a similar sign indicating it would be closed on Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, the signs on the door of Stepping Stones had been removed, although it’s unclear if the facility is operating again. Signs at The HUB remain in place.
Stepping Stones is the only emergency shelter in Nelson. Located at 816 Vernon St., the facility can house up to 17 people for a stay of up to 30 days. Stepping Stones is managed by the Nelson CARES Society.
Vista Radio reached out for comments from four Nelson CARES departments including Stepping Stones, the Nelson Committee on Homelessness, Services for Community Living and the Nelson CARES administration team but has not received a response.
