Installation of traffic lights at four-way stop on Nelson’s Baker Street starts

Construction is expected to increase this week at the Highway 3A and Baker Street intersection in Nelson for the installation of traffic lights.

Last month the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced plans to install traffic lights at the four-way intersection with hopes to improve the flow of traffic and make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are being asked to be mindful of traffic signs and construction crews over the summer months until the project is complete.

The ministry contracted Castlegar’s Marwest Construction to complete the $1.3 million project. The company began setting up for the project last week.

In a follow-up email, the ministry stated that initial activities such as mobilizing office trailers and equipment, surveying and layout will not impact traffic and they do not anticipate the project will cause significant delays for motorists throughout its completion.

The ministry also stated that motorists may see an increase in crews and signage within the next week as the construction begins and asks the public to pay attention to traffic signs and crews and equipment.

The project is expected to be complete by the end of October.
