Provincial snowpack well below normal, region at 0%

The BC River Forecast Centre is warning of a province-wide drought this summer, as the snowpack is lower than normal for this time of year.

The snowpack in the East Kootenay, West Kootenay and the Upper Columbia area is at zero per cent of normal levels.

The forecast centre says there are a couple of factors for why snowpack levels are so low.

They said drought conditions in the fall are partially to blame and unusually hot weather early in the spring quickened the snow melt.

One positive is that the flood risk from snowmelt is mostly over in B.C., but extreme rainfall events can always cause flooding in certain areas.

Hot weather is expected through much of the summer, which will add to wildfire risk.
