Lead fire weather forecaster warns of lightning risk for Kootenay region

Our area is expected to get some lightning over the next couple of days, which could spark some wildfires.

Lead fire weather forecaster Matt MacDonald said the risk is there with how dry it has been.

“Our fuels are so receptive right now to ignition and this first round of thunderstorms is entering around the southeast area of the province,” he said.

Lightning is expected to hit most of the Kootenays.

“We’re talking in and around the Fernie/Elkford area and it’s expected to spread westward through Cranbrook, out towards Castlegar and even potentially as far west as Osoyoos and the southern Okanagan.”

There is some rain in the forecast but McDonald said some areas will probably see very little and maybe not at all.

Our region has had it easy so far this fire season. There are only five active fires in the southeast fire centre and only three are in the southern area of the region.
