The Nelson Soccer Association has received a $5,000 grant from the RDCK to conduct a feasibility study for a $3.4 million indoor soccer dome that was proposed last fall.
The grant request was made at the RDCK directors meeting last Thursday and now that it has been approved, Nelson Soccer can move forward with their investigation into potential locations for the facility and funding. It will also look at the long-term effects an indoor year-round sports facility would have on the community.
RDCK Area F director Tom Newell is supportive of the idea of an indoor sports facility in Nelson and says approving feasibility studies, such as this one, is part of Rec 5’s ongoing efforts to support recreational services.
“Rec 5 which consists of the City of Nelson, Area F and part of Area E, in their ongoing desire to have a relationship with various groups that are providing recreation services, have established a fund to help support feasibility studies by various groups,” he says.
“The commission felt that the project that Nelson Soccer wanted to engage in by trying to find an all-season facility was a really valid project, so that is why it was approved at the commission.”
Newell said that it can take up to six months to conduct a feasibility study.
“Now that the funding has been approved, they [Nelson Soccer] have to find someone to do the study, set the parameters and raise a bit more money to supplement what they already have.”
Once the feasibility study is complete, the group will have to approach the rec commission again to discuss its result and revisit the proposal.
