CASTLEGAR, B.C. – RCMP confirm the missing hiker on Mount Gimli, west of Slocan lake, has been located deceased.
Tuesday’s large search and rescue operation for a missing hiker got a tragic end after the 27-year old man was found dead in a mountainous area on Mount Gimli, a popular hiking trail west of Slocan lake and north of Castlegar.
According to a news release by RCMP, the man was an experienced hiker who departed alone Monday morning.
He was supposed to return by 7 PM but never contacted his friends, who subsequently filed a missing person report
to South Slocan RCMP.
RCMP writes the 27-year-old man was found by Search & Rescue after what appears to be a substantial fall from approximately 260 meters.
A SAR helicopter was brought in to provide access to the body for RCMP and the Coroner.
Police have been in contact with the family who resides in Ontario.
“The RCMP would like to recognize the excellent efforts of the Kaslo Search and Rescue team
for their determination and professionalism during this difficult recovery. The investigation is
ongoing and police are speaking to other hikers who were in the area at the time”, RCMP writes in a news release.
