The Nelson Curling Club facility is now completely free from ammonia after a leak was discovered Tuesday night.
Club president Gordon Wiess and says they were going to clear out the ammonia anyway after a leak earlier this year and were aware that another leak was possible.
He described it as a minor situation that doesn’t impact plans to repair the ice plant.
“We’re doing well. Our fundraising is coming along very well. We’ve had support from the City and the regional district, so we’re just waiting to meet with all parties to formulate a plan moving forward, but everything is falling into place. We’re doing everything we can now to ensure we’re operating in October,” said Wiess.
Earlier this year, Nelson City Council provided up to $30,000 to help with the repairs. The club is volunteer run and they’ve also approached the regional district’s rec commission about taking on responsibility of managing the ice plant in future.
